Deadloch

reviewing the Australian police show

I’ve been catching up on a lot of shows over the last few weeks - whether it’s been Ghosts, Lupin, The Changeling, Castlevania Nocturne, One Piece, Loki, Gen V, Ahsoka and more.

However, we came across this gem on Prime (the least good streaming service we subscribe to) and I wanted to i) recommend it and ii) talk about why I loved it so much.

Firstly, it’s worth giving a short overview of Deadloch. Set in a town of the same name, it follows a female senior sergeant (Dulcie Collins played by Kate Box) as she investigates a murder in her town.

Except she doesn’t want to investigate - she gave up being a detective in Sydney and moved to arse end of nowhere to avoid this kind of thing. So the powers that be send down another detective (Eddie Redcliffe played by Madeleine Sami) to take over the investigation. Except by the time Eddie arrives, Dulcie has her teeth into the investigation and doesn’t want to let go and they’re forced to work together.

So far, so familiar. Except this show is a black comedy to rival anything you’ve seen, absolutely foul mouthed in a way that’s sure to make aussies either extremely proud or desperately embarrassed and full of characters who turn this from what could have been a mundane (if interesting) cop show into something that’s by turns gruesome and very, very funny.

What makes all this possible is that the show is brilliantly written by Kate McCartney and Kate McLennan.

What really did it for me is that this is a decaying small town which has been revitalised by becoming a hub for the LGBTQ+ community and as a serial killer runs rampage through the town, the challenges facing the pre-existing community and its newcomers are thoroughly poked, laughed at and skewered and it’s glorious to watch. It works because no one’s really seen as the but of the joke at someone else’s expense (except perhaps the Police Commissioner who’s an absolute buffoon).

So, get onto Prime and watch this if you get a chance. Prime is really erratic but when it gets it right it really smashes it and Deadloch is a perfect example of a show that deserves more people’s time…if they can handle the prolific cunt count.
